ACTION Week March 23:
Support Grocery Store Employees

Script
"Hello, my name is __________________ and I live in Illinois, zip code __________. I’m calling to ask that Governor Pritzker afford grocery store employees the same protections and rights as other essential emergency responders during the COVID-19 crisis. Grocery store employees in Illinois are working tirelessly on the front lines of this public emergency. They should be provided free childcare, free testing, personal safety equipment, and wage reimbursement in cases of quarantine and/or store closures. "

“Stores that sell groceries and medicine” are identified as essential businesses in Governor Pritzker’s Stay At Home executive order. Yet, workers in these essential businesses are not given the protections of other emergency responders even though they risk potential exposure every day. We need to formally recognize the critical and potentially dangerous work grocery store employees do every day to make sure we have access to life sustaining food and medicine. Grocery store employees deserve a level of support commensurate with the unique value their work provides during this challenging time.
